Sound

I have finished my sound, creating a song that is appropriate to the feature. The sound itself is split into three distinct pieces. the first two last about 30 seconds, and the last a short 16. The first part, mainly using violins is supposed to show the intelligent and calm nature of the titular character. The synth bass that is used quietly underneath it is to show that the character is modern. As the Title "Marlo" Comes onto the screen, it is greeted with a sudden explosive sound. This is used as the main separating feature, and also to represent the explosive nature of the character. As the noise fades down, a deep, sinister tune is played. This shows the other side of the character. He is always changing between his reasonable and darker sides, and the music is used to represent this. Finally at the end, a guitar slowly builds and constantly plays as Marlo beets someone up. This is simply none-diagrtic, yet ambient noise, not as loud as the rest of the soundtrack.  Its reason is simply to keep some kind of noise constantly going, and to not let the soundtrack rest. Underneath the entire soundtrack is the sound of a volcano erupting. It is a constant, and though quiet now, would build in size until tensions snapped later on in the film. It is used to represent underlying feelings of rage that would become more prevalent and obvious as the film progressed.

As of 5th march 2012, i have not filmed, and therefore have no rough cut.

Garage band

Using the sound design software "Garage Band" i started to create a "Theme-Song" for my film. It plays throughout the beginning of the opening, and fades out to allow for some dialogue. I used the same violin track for the majority of the song, introducing faint  synthesisers. However, in the end the track was too long, and some of it had to be cut out. This cut out does not effect the pacing or  impact of the song however.

Logo Ideas

Using the research i gathered from the three logo's, i made a rough draft of what my own logo could look like. My initial design includes a black door with a doorframe. Taking inspiration from the doors in my own house, a square pattern is shown with white lines. There is also a doorknob that is represented with a white circle. The name, "BlackOut Pictures" Bisects the door. The lettering is black over the lighter sections of the image, and over the black parts of the door i made the lettering white. I tried to centre all the text so there was an equal amount Hanging off of either side. Above the door i included the text "Vereor Quod Fides" Which is latin for "Respect And Assurance.", a slogan for the company. Underneath the main image i have put the parent company, as it seems common practice to do so. To finish off the logo i gave it a grainy background and a thick black boarder. This is meant to evoke images of silent movies and add a sense of horror to the overall image, as it harks back to films such as "Nosferatu" and "The Phantom of the Opera"

This logo is a more simple, text based design than my previous. Rather than cutting through a complicated shape, i had the words change colour over the companies initials. The line on the right of the "P" is to add some kind of symmetry to the whole shape. However i wanted to tip the balance of symmetry by adding the logo underneath the "P". By placing it to the right and making it smaller, western audiences will assume it is less important than the large central image. Once again i have kept to a black and white colour scheme to add a sense of age or foreboding to the somewhat bright image.

Returning to the gritty grey of the Background, i attempted to make the text look as if was exploding with ink or something similar. This is to emphasise the dark content of the film. The grey "Clouds" are there to evoke a sense of misery, because an overcast day is usually portrayed as miserable. This use of pathetic fallacy is only used to heighten the foreboding of the distorted text. Because the parent company may not want to be associated with the gritty image i am trying to get across, there is a thin black line between the two names.

Logo research

The new-line cinema Logo is comprised of a box with two Strips of film on either side of it. One strip of film is turned to Bisect the box diagonally. There is a faint blue glow behind the logo to give it form, as it is just a Silhouette. The broad white text underneath the simple image is clearly visible, and from a graphical point of view, is probably the strongest point of the entire Logo. The dash underneath the company name separates them from their Parent company.
.                                                                                                     .

The Warner Bros logo resembles a shield, the gold and blue making the viewer think of richness. The initials inside of the shield are stylised to look more symmetrical and to perfectly fit the shape of the border. The background adds a sense of fantasy, or of freedom, With the clouds showing that the shield is floating in the sky. Their parent company is located just underneath the shield, not needing to be separated by any means because the company name bisects the shield.
.                                                                                                          .

The Newmarket films logo is relatively simple compared to the other two. The name "Newmarket" is in bold orange letters, whereas the word "Films" Is in thin grey letters. They are connected by replacing Half of the letter "T" with the thin grey "F", which means the "T" retains it's overall shape whilst joining the two words in an unusual way. The parent company is written extremely small underneath the Company logo, to differentiate between the two.

Further Inspiration

I've taken some inspiration from the ITV TV Drama Whitechapel

Most of these shots are easily achieved and very effective. With some effects and clever use of editing, it would be highly beneficial to set the mood. The fast, blurred shots also relate to the film "se7en", another crime thriller. Most of the quick Shots will contain writing or violence, showing the methodical yet violent nature of the title character.  Orange and red hues will be used to give a tint of rage to the writing, and the quick editing pace of such scenes will add to this effect.

Image analysis and composition

This image is a closeup.  The use of a close-up allows the director to break-the-fourth-wall in a sense by having the actress stair directly into the camera. With her eye-line falling into the centre of the screen, the girl is directly addressing the audience. This allows the audience to sympathise with her. However, her expression is one of deranged joy, bringing the fact she is possessed to the forefront of the viewer's mind. The make-up is used effectively to convey the idea of an evil character, with the withered lips and rotten teeth creating a sense of unnatural decay. The use of contact-lenses to decrease the size of the pupils is also effective in the relatively dim light. The lighting, though dim, suggests some kind of holy intervention, as the light is white and coming from above. This contrasts with the demonic visage to create a subtle feeling of a duel-layered character. The angle of the camera effects Her personality as well, as it is straight on. This is unusual because of her powerful nature, usually it would be a low angle shot. However, the resistance of the innocent girl is creating a tip in the balance of power, keeping the demon in check.

This is a Wide-Long shot. The distance that is created by the Long shot allows the director to use lighting in an effective manner, placing the main source of light at the end of the tunnel. This creates a darkness towards the bottom edge of the screen, and this darkness creates the feeling that the audience  is hidden from, or even stalking the character. The character is placed entirely in the middle of the screen, showing her displacement and emotional detachment from her surroundings, and suggesting it is not her usual habitat. Keeping the character in the middle and bottom of the screen also creates a feeling of foreboding and uncertainty. The walls of the tunnel are used to create a closed-caption shot, further adding to the sense of entrapment and displacement. The broken bits of rock and stone from the ceiling show the tunnel is old and decrepit, most likely abandoned.

Primary Audience Research

The Questions i asked were:

1.     What age group do you believe this movie is aimed at?

2.     What do you think the genre of this film is?

3.     Do you think the music suits the pace of the images? How?

4.     Do you think the Amount of shots is effective in building narrative? How?

5.     Can you tell what this film is going to be about by looking at this section?

6. How effective is the opening in setting mood? How is it effective?

The feedback given by my audience, will effect the decisions i make stylistically. For example, To give the impression of a lower social class, and a gang environment, to give the actor/s a uniformed appearance that have aspects that reflect the personalities of the characters. Music should be used to set the tone of the film, whilst still being context sensitive to the images on screen. It is not necessary to have a lot of action or fast-paced editing, it can be more effective to introduce the film slowly. Location, whether interacted with or not, tells people what the themes of the movie are before any action has taken place. Finally, about twenty seconds of narration can completely change the mood of the opening, and reveal more about the plot early on.

Distribution

New line cinema

I think new line cinema would be interested in distributing my film, as they have distributed similar titles in the past. Most notedly, Se7en. Other films with similar content are: "A Nightmare on Elm street" (2010), "The Number 23", "Final Destination", "Domino" and "American History X" All of these films are similar to mine in the fact that the main plot points are revealed over time, or require a bit of thinking from the audience. Most of the films also contain a large amount of violence, and most are Rated '15'.

Target Audience

The audiance will depend on what kind of thriller film. Like all genres, there are sub-genres and to give an accurate answer you would have to specify what kind of thriller film.

There are those thrillers that are borderline horror films, such as The Sixth Sense, Signs, The Village. Since they're close to horror (and horror films target teenage males), the demographic would be slightly different, probably younger and more male based demographic.

And then there are legal thrillers (Fracture, Runaway Jury) and crime thrillers (Memento, Se7en) that target a more mature audience. Legal thrillers are usually aimed more at a female audiance, and crime thrillers aimed at a male audiance.

Based on the evidence given by the films "Corolanus" and "Man on a Ledge", most likely young adult, male demographic from 18-25. Most likely C1 in terms of social class.

Using this information to work out the type of audiance a crime thriller attracts, i can start to think about what is aesthetically pleasing to that audiance. from my research, it is evident that 21-30 year old males will most likely be my greatest audiance. Generally Crime thrillers contain winding plots, shocking openings and lots of violence or gore.
